Y/nβs eyes snapped open. Strong, large hands wrapped firmly around her waist. For one heartbeat, she did not understand where she was. All she saw was darkness and moving silver shapes, like broken moonlight twisting through water.
Then her chest burned. Her lungs screamed for air. She tried to breathe, desperately, but only cold water rushed into her mouth
Her back met a warm solid body under the freezing water. That warmth felt unreal, almost shocking against the cold surrounding her.
Her back pressed against a broad chest. She felt herself being pulled upward, fast, her body gliding through the water as if she was flying, up and up, the pressure on her ears fading with every second until, she felt air.
Her head broke the surface. She gasped, coughing, water spilling from her lips as she choked and fought for breath. Her vision blurred; everything was light and shadow, glimmering reflections of the blue water and the stone circle around her. The world swayed, her lashes heavy with drops that clung to them like tiny beads. She rubbed at her face, wiping the water away until she could see again. Stone walls surrounding the circular pool, faint reflections of water trembling on them.
But she barely noticed any of it.
